First 10 Customers From Reddit: The 7-Day Plan (Templates)
A day-by-day plan to test Reddit as a customer channel: exact search strings, a ten-point qualification checklist, reply templates and a day-7 decision.
By MentionLeads · Published October 2, 2026 · 10 min read
In short: Your first 10 customers from Reddit start with a seven-day test, not a promise: define the buyer's question on day 1, qualify threads on days 2 and 3, reply to ten with real help on days 4 to 6, review on day 7. Expect ten conversations and a clear yes or no, not guaranteed sales.
Getting your first 10 customers from Reddit is a sequencing problem before it is a writing problem. Starting with the reply skips the work that decides whether a reply lands: choosing the question buyers ask, searching for it with exact strings and qualifying each thread before you write. That is why this plan posts nothing until day 4, and why it ends with a decision instead of a hope.
What is the 7-day plan for finding customers on Reddit?
The 7-day plan spends three days on research and qualification, three days on replies and follow-ups, and one day on review. Each day has one output, so you can see on day 3 whether enough qualified threads exist and on day 7 whether people respond.
| Day | Task | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Define the ask, choose five communities, check your account | One-sentence problem and five communities with their rules noted |
| 2 | Run the nine searches and save promising threads | A list of about 30 saved threads (a pace, not a target you must hit) |
| 3 | Score each thread with the ten-point checklist | The 10 best threads, in order |
| 4 | Reply to three threads | Three useful replies, logged |
| 5 | Reply to three more and answer responses | Six replies and follow-ups sent |
| 6 | Reply to the last four and move invited conversations to DMs | Ten replies; DMs only where invited |
| 7 | Review the scoreboard | A keep, change or stop decision |
Plan B for a new account: if your account is too new to comment in your target communities (each community's rules say), spend days 4 to 7 on genuinely helpful comments with no mention of your product, then run the plan again next week. If you sell SaaS, pair it with our guide to first SaaS customers from Reddit and Hacker News.
What do you do on day 1?
On day 1, write the one sentence that describes the problem you solve in the words a buyer would use, list the three moments when buyers ask for help, pick five communities where they ask and read each community's rules. Then confirm that your account is visible and allowed to comment.
- The problem sentence: "People who [situation] and struggle with [problem] ask: '[the question in their words]'."
- The three buyer moments: a recommendation request ("what do you use for..."), a switch ("alternative to...", "moving away from...") and a painful workaround ("tired of doing X by hand").
- Five communities: build the list with the free subreddit finder, then note for each what the rules allow: vendor replies, links, account age or karma minimums.
- Account check: run the free Reddit shadowban checker so you know your replies are visible.
Reddit's platform rules ask you to abide by community rules and to participate authentically, so the notes you take on day 1 decide what you can post on day 4.
Which exact searches should you run on day 2?
Run one search per buyer moment in each community, sorted by New and limited to the past week, and save every thread that survives a quick read. Use the nine strings below, fill in the brackets, and fall back to Google's site: search if Reddit's search returns nothing.
| Buyer moment | Search string to paste | What it finds |
|---|---|---|
| Recommendation | `subreddit:[community] self:yes ("looking for" OR "recommend" OR "any suggestions") [category]` | People shopping now |
| Recommendation | `title:"what do you use" [category]` | Short, high-intent questions |
| Recommendation | `(title:recommend OR title:recommendation) [category]` | Explicit requests |
| Switch | `self:yes ("alternative to" OR "replacement for") [competitor]` | People leaving a rival |
| Switch | `[competitor] ("switching from" OR "moving away from" OR "cancelled")` | A switch with a reason |
| Switch | `[competitor] ("too expensive" OR "doesn't scale" OR "missing")` | Pain you can name |
| Workaround | `self:yes ("tired of" OR "sick of" OR "wasting hours") [task]` | Frustration with a manual job |
| Workaround | `("by hand" OR "in spreadsheets" OR "manually") [task] (better OR automate OR tool)` | Workarounds ready to be replaced |
| Workaround | `("how do you handle" OR "how do you manage") [task]` | Process questions that can turn into buying questions |
Save the URL of each search so you can rerun it on day 3 and next week. For a fallback, use Google with `site:reddit.com/r/[community] "looking for" "[category]"` and the Tools menu's past-week filter. Our guides to Reddit search operators and to finding product recommendation requests on Reddit go deeper on the syntax.
How do you qualify a Reddit thread on day 3?
Qualify a thread by scoring it on ten checks, one point each: an explicit ask, a described problem, a fit with what you sell, a stated constraint, recent posting, openness to options, rules that allow your reply, room to add value, no existing perfect answer and no disqualifier. Reply at seven points or more; the cut-off is a convention to adjust after week one.
| # | Check | Passes when | Fails when |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Explicit ask | They request a recommendation or help | They vent or share news |
| 2 | Problem described | They name a specific failure or goal | Generic curiosity |
| 3 | Fit | Your product solves the stated problem | Adjacent problem or wrong audience |
| 4 | Constraint | Budget, team size, deadline or requirement is stated | No detail |
| 5 | Recent | Posted in the past week | Old or already resolved |
| 6 | Open | They ask for options | They have already decided |
| 7 | Rules | The community allows replies like yours | Vendors or links are banned |
| 8 | Value | You can help without mentioning your product | You would only be pitching |
| 9 | Gap | The thread lacks a good answer | The best answer is already there |
| 10 | Clean | No job post, student project, competitor or "free only" request | Any of those |
Score each saved thread, keep the ten best and order them by score. Paste a borderline thread into the free Buyer Intent Checker for a second opinion, and read how to qualify Reddit leads using post history when a poster's history will change your reply. If fewer than ten threads pass, that is itself an answer: widen the communities or the buyer moments instead of replying to weak threads.
What do you write in your replies on days 4 to 6?
On days 4 to 6, reply to ten qualified threads with one of four templates: answer-first for recommendation requests, empathy-plus-checklist for switching threads, pure help where promotion is banned, and a short follow-up when the poster responds. Every template answers the question first, states any connection to your product plainly and ends with one specific question. Three or four replies a day is a pace you can keep with real effort, not a platform limit.
Template A: a recommendation request
[One-sentence direct answer.] For [detail from their post], I would check [criterion 1] and [criterion 2] first, because [reason]. On a shortlist I would put [Option A], [Option B] and [your product]. I work on [your product], so weigh that: it is strongest at [specific strength] and weaker at [specific limit]. What matters more to you, [trade-off A] or [trade-off B]?
Template B: a switching thread
That [price change, limit or bug] is the usual trigger. Before you switch, check [two things that bite later]. If you stay, [workaround]. If you move, look for [criterion]. I work on [your product], which is built for [narrow job], so it will not replace [what it cannot do].
Template C: a community that bans promotion
[Answer the question completely and name no product.] If it helps, I can go deeper on [part of the problem] here. Your profile bio does the rest.
Template D: the poster replies
Glad it helped. For [their next detail], the next step is [specific step]. If you want, I can send [resource or example], here or by DM, whichever you prefer.
Template E: a DM, only after an invitation
Hi [name], following up from the [community] thread about [topic]. You asked about [detail], so here is [what you promised]. If it helps, I can also [one concrete next step]. No problem if not.
Do not paste the templates. Every bracket should hold a detail from the thread, and any mention of your product needs a plain disclosure; see how to disclose a company affiliation on Reddit. Run each draft through the free Reddit post checker or get a starting point from the Reddit reply generator.
How do you track the week?
Track every thread in a six-column sheet and move it through four statuses: New, Engaged, In conversation and Won. The sheet turns day 7 into a decision instead of a feeling.
| Thread link | Buyer moment | Score | Reply sent | Response | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| [URL] | Recommendation | 8 of 10 | Day 4 | Asked a follow-up question | In conversation |
The example row is illustrative, not a result.
What do you decide on day 7?
On day 7, count threads replied to, responses received, DM invitations and customers, then pick one of three decisions: keep going unchanged, change the searches or communities, or stop and test another channel. Decide from the counts, not from how the week felt, and treat the first week as your baseline because this guide gives no benchmark for reply or conversion rates.
| What the counts show | What it suggests | Next move |
|---|---|---|
| Many qualified threads and replies get responses | The channel and message fit | Repeat weekly and add two communities |
| Many qualified threads but few responses | Replies are not landing | Add more thread-specific detail, check drafts with the post checker and re-check account visibility |
| Few qualified threads | Searches or communities are off, or demand is thin | Try a different buyer moment or different communities; if still thin, test another channel |
| Responses but no customers | The offer or the follow-up is the problem | Review the DM and the offer, and ask what stopped them |
These readings are suggestions to test, not benchmarks.
Frequently asked questions
Can you really get customers from Reddit in 7 days?
A purchase within a week is possible, but no plan can promise it. Seven days is enough to learn whether qualified buyers exist, whether they respond to useful replies and what to change. Treat ten conversations as the goal and customers as the possible result.
How many Reddit threads should I reply to each day when looking for customers?
Three or four a day is the pace this plan uses because each reply needs real effort; it is not a platform limit. Communities set their own rules and Reddit can restrict accounts that spam, so reply only to threads that pass the checklist and stop when quality drops.
How do I find Reddit threads where people are asking for my product?
Search for the three moments when buyers ask: recommendation requests, switching threads and painful workarounds, using exact phrases from your category, sorted by New for the past week. Save the threads, then score them with the ten-point checklist; the free Buyer Intent Checker can second-guess borderline ones.
